Pattaya or Phuket: which one to choose for your trip
Pattaya and Phuket compared on what matters: the sea, getting there, rain by month and nearby airports — with weather-service figures and links to sources.

Pattaya and Phuket are Thailand’s two best-known resorts, and they are the pair people most often choose between. They are different places: a different sea, a different journey, even their rain peaks in different months.
In short
| Pattaya | Phuket | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Mainland, Chonburi province | An island, its own province |
| Sea | Gulf of Thailand | Andaman Sea |
| From Bangkok | about 150 km by road | a flight |
| Nearby airport | U-Tapao, about 45 minutes | Phuket International, in the north of the island |
| Rain per year | about 1,100 mm | about 2,200–2,500 mm |
| Wettest month | October | September |
Getting there
Pattaya is on the mainland, about 150 km south-east of Bangkok. If you land at Suvarnabhumi, Pattaya is about 120 km away by road. The closest airport is U-Tapao, around a 45-minute drive south.
Phuket is an island in the west of the country. Its international airport is in Thalang district in the north of the island; the Sarasin Bridge links the island to the mainland.
The takeaway is simple: if Bangkok is part of the trip, Pattaya is closer. If you want straight to the sea without a long transfer by land, Phuket.
Rain
Thailand’s rainy season runs roughly from mid-May to mid-October, but the amount of water differs.
- Phuket. According to the Thai Meteorological Department, about 2,200–2,500 mm falls a year, and the wettest month is September. It is mostly dry from December to March.
- Pattaya. By World Meteorological Organization normals, about 1,100 mm a year — half as much. The wettest month is October.
If your trip falls in September, keep that in mind.
Sea and beaches
Phuket faces the Andaman Sea; its west coast is a chain of separate beaches, each with its own small town. Pattaya is a city on the Gulf of Thailand, and its beach is a city beach.
What is the same
In both places there are evenings when you do not want to go anywhere: heat, a downpour, a tiring journey. For those evenings Rent Station delivers a PlayStation 5 — in Pattaya and in Phuket. Rental prices are the same:
- 3 days — 1,000 ฿;
- a week — 2,000 ฿;
- a month — 4,000 ฿.
These are low-season prices. Delivery in Phuket ranges from 400 ฿ to Kathu and Patong to 700–800 ฿ to Mai Khao; in Pattaya we name the delivery price once you send your area. No deposit, cash on delivery.
Leave the console at home — we bring one to you.
